Even though, elm is becoming increasingly rare, it is as popular as ever with furniture manufacturers. Elm has medium movement in service, exceptional ability to resist splitting and will polish or wax to a lustrous finish. Overall elm is darker in colour than other native hardwoods and possesses an attractive grain pattern. |

This beautifully crafted chair was built using Irish oak. Oak is a strong, durable timber and probably the most well known of all the timbers grown in Ireland. The wood gives an excellent machined finish, glues well and has a moderate movement in service. Oak would be an excellent choice as a furniture material. |

This attractive “Benvoy TV unit” was manufactured using high quality native spanish chestnut timber. Although spanish chestnut resembles oak in appearance, it is lighter and easier to work with than oak. It also machines very well, giving a fine finish and in addition has a small movement in service. |

Walnut is particularly prised by cabinet markers and furniture manufacturers for it dark brown colour and attractive grain. It also has many other attractive characteristics, which make it a popular choice with craftsmen.
